Too Late To Tell. . .Or Maybe Not?

Ponyboy came home today and told Darry and I taht his english teacher is giving him one last chance to pass. If he does well on this assignment then he'll pass him with a C even though that's not was he deserves, he doesn't want to see him fail.
Darry, once again, got angry with him. They both tried to bring me into it, asking me to pick sides.
I couldn't take it, I just ran out of the house and didn't look back.
I didn't stop still I got to the park.
You see, I can usually take the fighting, but not today. Today I was sent back all the letters I've sent to Sandy, unopened.
Did she get them and not even want to talk to me? Or did her parents think that there was no need to give her the letters since I wasn't the father?
I pounded my fist against the ball diamond's fence.
I just wanted to see her.

I sat the for a few minutes, just crying. I hardly ever cry.
Not long after I got there I saw Ponyboy and Darry running down the street.
They apologized first, I told them we should be trying to stay close, not fight. After a long talk we decided we should pull together not fight.
We headed home everything fixed. Well, mostly. I still needed to know about Sandy.
Ponyboy went to his room, to work on his paper I'm guessing.
It was then I decided what I needed to do.
"Darry, I'm leaving," I said.
"Wha- why?" he asked dumb struck.
"I need to see Sandy, I don't care if the kid isn't mine, or if it is, I just need to see her," I said shaking my head.
"What about sticking together? What we were just talking about!" he pleaded.
"I won't be gone for ever and I won't stay there. I just need to see her."
Darry looked at me for a long time.
"Alright," he said finally, "but you have to come back," his words were heavy.
"I will," I promised.
I gave him a hug.
"I'm leaving now, the sooner the better," I told him. He nodded. "You tell Ponyboy I'm sorry and that I'll be back soon alright?"
"No problem little brother," he said and gave me another hug.
"Bye Darry," I said and left the house.
I got into my car and started to drive to Florida.
To Sandy.
